I rescued a humane today

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past.

I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor.

So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. I rescued a human today.

The deadline to file pet license renewals with the city is April 30.  A valid rabies tag number and vaccination expiration date from a veterinarian’s office must be on file.  The fee for spayed or neutered animals is $3, non-spayed or neutered animals are $6 and potentially dangerous animals are $10.  There is a late filing fee of $15 if the license is renewed after April 30.

Please contact the city controler’s office with questions at 574-294-5471.  Mail-in renewals are accepted.

City Hall is at 229 S. Second St., Elkhart, IN  46516

Help Solve Indiana’s Puppy Mill Problem

A letter from Mike Martin regarding the new legislation for Puppy Mills:

The Indiana legislature is considering H.B. 1468, legislation that would help to crack down on puppy mills in Indiana.

H.B. 1468 passed the House with language to limit the number of dogs puppy mill operators can own and also institute humane care standards. However, the Senate stripped out that language and now the bill only allows for minimal USDA standards which allow mother dogs to be bred repeatedly for their entire lives, cages to be stacked 5 or more high and no cap on the number of dogs that can be bred. In short, these facilities can still have 700 or more dogs and would be compliant with the new law.

Please contact Governor Mitch Daniels and let him know that you want a real solution to the puppy mill problem in Indiana.

TAKE ACTION
Please take a moment today to call Governor Daniels at 317-232-4567 to urge support for H.B. 1468, as it was passed in the House.

When you call, you will likely speak to a staff member who will pass your message along to Governor Daniels. Remember to be polite and professional, and leave your name and address so it is clear that you are a constituent. You can say:

“Hello, my name is [your name] and I am calling from [your town] to ask Governor Daniels to support H.B. 1468, as it passed the House — real legislation to crack down on puppy mills by instituting humane care standards and a cap on the number of dogs that can be kept for breeding. Thank you.”

After making your call, send a follow-up email to Governor Daniels in support of H.B. 1468, as it was passed in the House. Finally, please tell your friends and family in Indiana how they can help.

Thank you for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Mike Markarian
Executive Vice President
The Humane Society of the United States

Thanks Mike! We will definitely pass this along to everyone we know to help stop puppy mills!

Meet Franklin!  Franklin is one of our office cats here at the shelter.  Franklin is very special to all of us here at the Humane Society.  Not only does he have 6 toes on both his front paws, but he almost didn’t make it as a kitten.  He was rescued and given lots of love by our staff.  After falling in love with him, we couldn’t bare to see him go.   Not only does he get lots of love, but as you can see, his belly doesn’t miss a meal either.

You can come see Franklin anytime you come to the Humane Society.  He’ll greet you with one eye open and if you scratch his back, he may even roll over for you!
