Cat Companion Program

Right now, the Humane Society of Elkhart County is offering cat adopters an opportunity to adopt a companion cat for the new family member and we will wave the adoption fee.  All we will require is the adopter to put down the $50 spay/neuter deposit (if required) and then once the cat is spayed/neutered, you will get that $50 back!  So in the long run, it’s actually a Adopt 1, get 1 free deal!

If you’re wondering why in the world you would want 2 cats, here’s a few reasons we came up with:

  1. By having two or more cats, you are able to enjoy the true social nature of cats and their relationship with each other.
  2. Cats who have a playmate tend to be more socially well-adjusted, smarter and avoid behavioral problems.
  3. Cats are much less likely to gain weight due to lack of movement and are less likely to suffer related illnesses.
  4. Your cat will remain more playful and youthful into his or her later years with a companion.
  5. You don’t need more space for a second cat!
  6. ….and, the workload to care for two cats remains relatively the same…because, two are always better than one!

I had my 30 seconds of TV fame yesterday!  For those who missed it, you can click on the link below:

Adopt-A-Pet on Fox 28 News

I was on Fox 28 News with “Leo” who is available for adoption!  What a cutie he is too.  I just love his face.  Leo is a St. Bernard/Beagle mix.  He’s pretty much full grown.  If anyone is interested, he is definitely a must see!

New Adventure

I haven’t been posting this week because it has been an absolute adventure!  Monday, I started working at the Humane Society!!!!  It’s been a lot of fun and the hours go by like minutes.  Today for instance, I didn’t get out of there until 5:30.  If I would have still been at my other job, I would have been counting down to 5:00 at 8:00 AM :)

I went out with one of our Humane Officers yesterday and I spent the entire day learning about abuse cases and neglect complaints.  It’s frustrating that we get those kind of calls.  I don’t know how anyone would want to hurt their animals.  We get many calls in the summer when it’s hot outside.  People leave their animals outside in the sun with no water.  Luckily for me, I did not have to experience an abuse or neglect case yesterday but we did pick up a couple of kittens that we’re probably only a few weeks old.  They we’re very dehydrated and unfortunately they didn’t make it :(

On a brighter note, today I was interviewed and photographed for the Goshen News regarding the Strutt Your Mutt Dog Walk next Saturday.  Look for the article in the Goshen Newspaper and look for me at the Dog walk on August 23!

Bringing home a new pet
August 5, 2008, 1:00 pm

You just adopted a pet.  Congratulations!  Hopefully you adopted from us!  If not… we’ll talk later ……Here are a few tips of what to do when you bring home your new pet.

Establish the rules. Decide who’s responsible for what: grooming, feeding, exercising, cleaning, play-time, and so on. Also establish whether or not there will be areas that are “off-limits” for your new pet. For example, you may not want your pet to sleep on the bed.

Have all the necessary supplies ready. Examples are food, food and water bowls, leash or harness, collar and identification, brush, and so on.

Pet-proof your home. Some things you may want to consider include:

  • Lock away household chemicals, such as cleansers, insecticide, antifreeze, and others. Animals are especially attracted to antifreeze; be sure to clean up spills immediately and keep the rest out of reach as even a small amount can be fatal.
  • Place houseplants out of reach. Many houseplants are poisonous.  Click here for a list of plants that are poisonous to our furry friends.
  • Have separate areas for your new pet and any existing pets. Pets need to be introduced to one another slowly; be sure you have an extra room or a kennel so that your pets can be separated until they have grown accustomed to each other.  Baby gates work well too!
  • Tie electrical cords out of the way, if you can. Dogs and cats can chew on electrical cords – or even catch them while walking (or running!) around, causing lamps, TVs, radios, etc. to fall.
  • Keep doors closed – this includes the doors to your washer and dryer, your closets, the cupboards … inquisitive little animals can sneak in just about anywhere!
  • Keep household trinkets out of your pet’s reach. Stuff like garbage, medicine, pins, elastics, thread, needles, and so on should be placed out of the way.

Make sure everyone knows how to properly handle your pet. Everyone should know how to safely pick up your pet. Also emphasize certain rules such as your pet should never be disturbed while eating.

And remember, a new pet is a big responsibility.  If you have questions about your pets, you may call the HSEC and we’ll be glad to assist you!
